Question ID
Mujtahid Name Sastani
Question Gelatin being haram or halal is a frequent question that has never been properly answered. I dont eat it, to be on the safe side but I need some explanations telling me exactly if I can eat it or not, and why. So my question is, Is gelatin halal or haram? Does chemical change, (istahala) count towards making gelatin halal? Why is gelatin haram if so?
Answer Gelatine : This is a substance which is made up of plant or animal parts (organ). If it is made up of plants then there is no problem in that and if it is made up of animals and not slaughted according to the rules of islam, it is haram according to Ayatullah Sistani d.b. because according to Ayatullah Sistani d.b. Istehala is considered in the moteharaat if the basic organ of first thing (mustahala) are no more left. (Ref : Ayatullah Sistani, Jadeed faqhi masael , Mafhoom e maslah #16 , Pg #308 , Eidition# 5). Update on dated 15-06-2015. (Khuda aap ko Uloom e Aal e Muhammad(s.a.w.w) sekhne ka ajar ata farmaey).
