Question ID
Mujtahid Name Ayatullah Sistani
Question Assalaam O Alaikum, My question(s) are related to KHUMUS. Just before now, i had thought i had calculated my KHUMUS correctly last night, but was going through the Q&A on your site, and reading the Ayatullah Sistani verdicts and some sample KHUMUS worksheet available on internet, i am kind of confused (in doubt) as to the correctness of the KHUMUS amount and process. I am putting my questions below for the earliest reply. JAZZAK ALLAH Please note, that - I have never taken KHUMUS money out and this is first time. - For the year 1998, I worked as full part-time to support my education and personal expenses - For the year 1999 to date I am working full time (14 Years) - Married in 2004 and have three children aging 7.5, 4.5, 2.5 Years - I am a salaried person with only one source of income - Living on rent Questions: 1) How do i calculate KHUMUS for the past years? Please, advise what to do? (where i do not have any record (bank & domestic) of all the years, and think will not be possible to get records from the bank for all the years and to recall memory for the same for domestic expenses. Though i have not tried as yet) 2) What do i do with things i bought during last year ended a day before, as i do not have record of all and even if i do it would an estimate. 3) Do i need to keep track of every item that i buy for the whole year if it is consumed or not? DO i need to keep a separate "account" of spending for each family member of mine with all day-to-day items for year ! This may include things from needle to cloth, candies to toy, razors, pens, copies etc. I mean everything consumed, worn, used. 4) Please elaborate that what is the meaning of ...exceeds his own annual expenses... Since, "exceed annual expense" is used often in different context (say gifts etc.). Where expenses for the years generally remains same (a figure with little change) and fulfilled through the pay/salary one gets. So, than if i get gifts, would "...exceeds his own annual expenses..." mean that : a) individual value of a gift that i get (out of many gifts) is so high that it exceed the annual expense - here the annual expense is used as a benchmark for evaluating either the KHUMUS is to be paid or not? Even though if someone has accounted for the expenses in a regular manner (Ref. Rule 1762) - OR - b) individual value of a gift is added to the yearly expenses until they reach to the annual expense figure and then any gift added from this point on is liable for KHUMUS? 5) My wife also has some savings from last years, which i gave her on account of her pocket money. Does she has to deduct KHUMUS from her saving as we understood and did? Please, clarify. 6) For the KHUMUS for the year 2012 i did following: a) Took balance of my bank account and deducted 20% from it b) Summed the value of unused items (which can be counted and the form we bought in) and took value of 20% out (One question here, we bought a pack of Erasers for our son and consumed one out of it, it came in a bundle) We accounted for the packet as whole not each eraser in it!!! Is that correct? c) Estimated the value of gits & cloth and took value of 20% out d) Took 20% value of a book not yet read e) summed all these deductions and deducted from the bank balance f) my wife simply withdrew 20% of her saving Please, help. In case if you need any further information in this regard, please do let me know. Sibtain
